Pay & Grading Support
We understand the complexities of public sector pay and grading issues. We have valuable, hands-on experience both in devising effective strategies and, crucially, in implementing them.
We offer exceptionally strong expertise in defence against mass equal pay claims and strategies to avoid them.
We have a detailed understanding of the culture in which public sector staff and managers have to work. This often proves highly significant. In our experience, few employees actively seek conflict and, by adopting a hands-on approach, we are able to use our specialist knowledge of their working environment and the law to achieve swift, successful results.
Our services include:
- Job Evaluation – we provide Job Analysts, skilled in the use of NJC and Hay,
for office based or on-site work. They evaluate roles, assist with the development
and testing of local conventions, conduct a full quality assurance process
and offer an independent appeals panel. We also provide data management
systems and training and awareness sessions for staff and managers.
“Job evaluation is a complex process involving risk. You must seek expert knowledge of how to build a job evaluation scheme”

- Pay Structure Design – our experienced HR and legal consultants assist with the design and development of pay structures and schemes of progression, as well as providing advice and delivering outcomes in respect of equality audits and impact assessments which adhere to the EHRC 5-step model.
- Pay Protection and Back Pay & COT3 Settlements – we provide advice and
guidance on differing solutions which will not only meet your organisation’s
needs but also comply with the law in an area of on-going change.
“Please note that equal pay case law is constantly developing. You should seek up to date advice”

- Project Management – our in-house project managers, skilled in public sector pay implementation, offer valuable ‘critical friend’ support through the provision of strategic and operational advice and guidance.
- Consultation and Negotiation – we deliver bespoke training and information seminars to ensure that your team of negotiators is equipped with the skills necessary for negotiating with TU representatives. We also facilitate the production of staff consultation strategies and the production of documentation.
- Equal Pay Litigation – a wealth of experience and success across numerous equal pay cases has granted our Head of Employment, barrister Jennifer Jones and her team an enviable reputation in this complex and controversial field.
